Tiwanaku was a ceremonial site. In addition to the vast Kalasaya compound, seen here from across the sunken temple, there is the Gateway of the Sun, Acapana Pyramid, a semi-subterranean temple and the Puma Punku, the Gateway of the Puma, compound across the railroad tracks from Tiwanaku. In the Kalasaya compound there are rooms cut from stone with stone faces carved into the walls.
